Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth provide rail thrill for film fans

THRILLED movie fans were stopped in their tracks yesterday — as Hollywood idol Nicole Kidman shot scenes for her new flick at Perth train station.

The Oscar-winning beauty was spotted on the platform while filming The Railway Man with King’s Speech star Colin Firth.

Aussie Nicole looked the picture of primness in a 1940s style green tweed jacket and tartan skirt. The actress was shown to a carriage as bespectacled Firth looked on anxiously.

The pair delighted onlookers at the Victorian-built station which is doubling as Edinburgh’s Waverley and has been transformed into a post-WW2 scene, including period carriages. Care worker Helen Dunlop, 47, of Dundee, said: “I came to Perth to meet a friend for lunch and I saw Colin Firth.

“I should really know better, but I’ll never quite get over his Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t get very close otherwise I might not have been able to keep my hands off him.” The movie tells the moving story of Scots soldier Eric Lomax, who survived the Burma railway as a prisoner of war, before meeting his camp tormentor years later.

The stars began filming at the weekend.

Firth plays Mr Lomax, now 92, with his wife Patti portrayed by Nicole.

The 10-week shoot will move from Scotland to Thailand in May, and then Australia in June.
