Luxury jewellery brand Chopard has enlisted Colin Firth as patron of their Chopard Trophy award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The Hollywood actor has been tapped by the luxury label to champion the Chopard Trophy award, which will be handed to two emerging talents at the prestigious movie event on May 16.

A jury including Harvey Weinsteinand Olivia Munn will select the winners, and the ceremony will then be followed up by a party at the Chopard Lounge located in the Martinez Hotel.

The star-studded soiree with feature a live performance bySolange Knowles, according to WWD.

The Chopard Trophy award is now in its 13th year and has bestowed the honour on some of Hollywood’s brightest in the past, includingMarion Cotillard and Diane Kruger.

Chopard – also responsible for making the prestigious Palme d’Or award – have designed “66 one-of-a-kind creations to be worn by celebrities” at the event.

Artistic director Caroline Scheufele was inspired by the theme of love while creating the gorgeous pieces which “feature gems in heart cuts and floral motifs, though diamonds remain the central focus.”

Chopard’s involvement with the festival doesn’t end there. The brand are also co-hosting a photo exhibition at the Chopard Lounge entitled In Love With Cinema.

The collection features the “most beautiful onscreen kisses”.

Changes in the website, anyone?

I have been having this website for a while now (ever since 2008) and I know I haven’t been a good admin, I hardly ever update it. I’m still a huge fan of Colin Firth, he’s still my favorite actor and I have been trying to update the website with news (that’s all I can do). I have been thinking about the following:

I need to change the looks of the website, I can totally get a new layout, but I need a kick ass banner, does anyone know how to create one? using photoshop with new images of Colin — I want something professional.
I’m thinking to create a community for the website (using buddypress and bbpress, with a built in forum instead of that complicated one we have).
If there’s anyone who wants to contribute with running the website, no need for special website knowledge, it’s so easy, I can easily show you how to write new posts and add new photos. (I have Tess responsible for the facebook page, but I feel like the FB page and this fansite are totally different things).

Colin Firth in Talks to Play Veteran Spy in Matthew Vaughn’s ‘The Secret Service’

20th Century Fox will distribute the adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel

In a change of pace from his recent fare, Oscar winner Colin Firth is in negotiations to star in Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of popular Marvel comic series “The Secret Service,” according to Latino Review.

Several individuals familiar with the 20th Century Fox project previously told TheWrap that Vaughn had tapped Firth for the lead role, though a studio spokesperson referred all casting inquiries to the director’s production company Marv Films, which is financing the film.

David Reid and Adam Bohling, who are currently producing “Kick-Ass 2″ with Vaughn and are expected to be involved in a producing capacity on “Secret Service,” did not reply to TheWrap’s earlier requests for comment, nor did Mark Millar, who created the graphic novel with Dave Gibbons.

Should a deal make, Firth would play a veteran secret agent who leads a young protege into the shadowy spy business.

Millar previously described the project as “James Bond meets My Fair Lady,” while Firth told one website during a press tour for “Arthur Newman” that Vaughn’s movie will be “unlike anything I’ve done.”

Vaughn, who last directed “X-Men: First Class” for Fox, is producing and directing from a script he co-wrote with frequent collaborator Jane Goldman. Shooting is scheduled to start this August overseas.

20th Century Fox, which beat out Universal Pictures for distribution rights, plans to release “The Secret Service” on Nov. 14, 2014.

The lead role in “Secret Service” will likely introduce Firth to a different audience, as he’s best known for lighter fare such as “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Mamma Mia,” though he did recently play a government agent in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The British actor won an Oscar for “The King’s Speech” and was also nominated for his sensitive performance in “A Single Man.” He’ll soon be seen in the West Memphis 3 movie “Devil’s Knot.”

Firth is repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.

Emma Stone, Colin Firth to Star in Woody Allen Comedy

The untitled project will shoot in France this summer.

Emma Stone and Colin Firth will star in Woody Allen‘s next, currently untitled comedy.

While the plot of the project is still very much under wraps, we do know that the film will be set in the South of France and shoot this summer.

The project will mark Allen’s second time shooting in France, and it will be his eighth film set in Europe.

The Gravier Productions film is produced by Allen’s longtime associates Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum.

Cinematographer Darius Khondji, production designer AnneSeibel and costume designer Sonia Grande, who all worked with Allen on Midnight in Paris and To Rome With Love, will collaborate again on this film.

Allen’s next film to hit theaters will be Blue Jasmine, opening July 26 via Sony Pictures Classics.

Stone, whose upcoming projects include The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Birdman, is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Ziffren Brittenham. Firth, who will star in Genius and The Railway Man, is represented by CAA and Independent Talent.

Colin Firth took a swing at golf for new film

Oscar winner COLIN FIRTH won’t be joining BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY co-star HUGH GRANT on the golf course anytime soon after trying to perfect his swing to play a professional in his new movie.

The actor took to the driving range to improve his knowledge of the game for new movie Arthur Newman, but quickly decided it wasn’t the sport for him.

He tells WENN, “I had never watched a single golf swing in my life, so it was a foreign language to me. I have enough weaknesses without needing another. I have seen what’s happened to friends of mine getting lost in golf.

“I could see when it sounds sweet when you hit it actually becoming an addiction. There is something that happens; there’s a thrill that runs through you and it works.

“There’s an indoor driving range in London and so, because I didn’t have to be seen in the film playing a whole game of golf, just a few swings, I tried to get some lessons and I never got further than hitting a small object 300 yards.”

In the new film, Firth portrays a man who fakes his death and takes on a new life as a golf pro.

Colin Firth on ‘Bridget Jones 3′ film: ‘There might be a long wait’

Colin Firth has cautioned fans of Bridget Jones’s Diary that another sequel could take a long time to be produced.

The third book in the Bridget Jones series is currently being written by Helen Fielding, but production company Working Title Films said in December that it is unclear if another film will be made.

Firth – who plays Mark Darcy in the films – offered a more positive view about the project’s future to The Chicago Sun Times, but admitted it will likely take some time before there is any movement on the project.

“Unfortunately, it might be a bit of a long wait,” the Oscar winner told the newspaper. “I wouldn’t say that it’s completely dead in the water, but the way it’s going you might be seeing Bridget Jones’s granddaughter’s story being told by the time we get there.”

He went on to say: “There is a joy of doing those movies that keeps hope alive. And the story is going in an interesting direction. I just wouldn’t say that the movie is imminent.”

Fielding’s next Bridget Jones book is expected to be released later this year. The most recent film, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, hit cinemas in 2004.

A Minute With: Colin Firth from royal to ordinary “Arthur Newman”

(Reuters) – After winning a Best Actor Oscar for playing a stuttering British royal in 2010 film “The King’s Speech,” Colin Firth is back on screen as a character who appears ordinary to the point of boring in indie drama “Arthur Newman.”

Opening in select U.S. movie theaters on Friday, Firth plays an American man who is dissatisfied with his life and hits the road with a new identity. Things get derailed when he meets Mike (Emily Blunt) a troubled young woman fleeing from her own issues.

Firth, 52, sat down with Reuters to talk about the film and life after his first Oscar win, and the (dimming) prospects of a third “Bridget Jones’ Diary” movie.

Q: What made you follow up an Academy Award win with a little indie like “Arthur Newman?”

A: At the time, the title of the film was “Arthur Newman Golf Pro” and I found it so off-putting, it perversely made me more intrigued. I thought by putting ‘golf’ in the title, the film wouldn’t be exactly marketable.

Q: How’s that?

A: If you don’t like golf, you won’t go to see the film. And if you like golf, you’re going to be disappointed because it’s not about golf. It was almost provocative in how willfully unmarketable it was, so I wanted to see what was inside.

Q: And what did you find?

A: A man who seemed steeped in ordinariness. In fact, he’s pronounced to be boring by several characters in the movie. So yes, he really is incredibly boring and that intrigued me. It always has. What is actually going on? What are the dynamics behind somebody languishing in a disappointing suburban life? What heroism is possible?

Q: How do you play someone like that? Where do you look to find a common thread?

A: We trap ourselves in all sorts of ways, however unusual or extraordinary our existence might seem from the outside. There are all kinds of ways in which we find ourselves on a treadmill.

If people dare to test the boundaries and step outside, it’s often characterized as running away from problems. But you can’t look at it that way. In Arthur Newman’s case, in some ways he was probably running in to something that was more awake and more authentic.

Q: You can’t possibly have any hint of dissatisfaction after winning an Oscar, can you?

A: That’s not true, because you’ve got the rest of your tasks ahead of you. Of course there’s immense reassurance (in having an Oscar) and it does give you a license for a certain freedom to do what you want and not have to prove something.

Q: Did you find that things changed for you after you won?

A: Not quickly. In some ways it’s happening now….An Oscar doesn’t suddenly work the miracle that manufactures a plethora of great writers who are suddenly ready to come to you with fully financed films, with the right director attached, landing on your table, saying: Take your pick. It’s not as coherent as that.

Q: Have you been able to use the Oscar to your advantage?

A: Yes. It definitely opens doors. There are ways in. If you want to reach somebody to get the collaboration on something, they’ll talk to you. That’s a very powerful difference I’ve noticed.

Q: Do you like that?

A: Yeah, I do. It’s useful. I think that’s probably the healthiest way to look at it, rather than have something that gets preserved on a shelf. Take it and use it as a tool. Then it has meaning rather than just something to look back on. You can’t live on one moment. And you can’t allow either a crisis or a triumph to be the only thing that defines you.

Q: You have a lot of films on your plate due this year and next: Atom Egoyan’s “Devil’s Knot” and two back-to-back films with Nicole Kidman. What’s the status on the sequel to “Bridget Jones’ Diary?”

A: We’ve been teasing people a little bit because there have been plans but they’re on ice now.

Q: Are you disappointed?

A: Not in the abstract. I don’t spend my life thinking, “I hope there’s another ‘Bridget Jones.’” I like the character and I like the story. I think (author-screenwriter) Helen Fielding is a wonderful writer. Where she began to take it in this next stage now that we’re all older is actually more interesting than it was in some ways back then. So if there’s a good story and a good script, I’ll think about it on that basis.

First picture of Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth filming ‘Before I Go To Sleep’ in London

Debut novelist tells of thrill at watching his book brought to life

This is the first picture of Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth shooting a new film in London in which she plays a woman who wakes every day remembering nothing.

The movie, Before I Go To Sleep, is based on the bestselling first novel by former NHS clinical scientist SJ Watson.

The book was published two years ago and snapped up by Liza Marshall and Ridley Scott’s production company, Scott Free London.

Rowan Joffé, who directed Brighton Rock, has adapted the book and has been directing the shoot.

Watson told the Standard of his thrill at watching Kidman and Firth bring his book to life. “It was fascinating for me to see somebody totally inhabit this character. She totally embodies what I thought Christine should be,” he said.

“There was one moment where she thought a line gave the wrong tone for Christine and as soon as she said it, I felt she was totally right. It’s weird that Nicole Kidman now knows my character as well as I do.”

Firth plays Kidman’s husband and Mark Strong is the psychotherapist committed to finding the cause of her acute and traumatic condition.

The novelist said it was “just phenomenal” to be involved in the film, which has been shooting at

Twickenham Studios and on location in London and Surrey.

“It’s kind of surreal. It feels almost like I’m walking around in my own imagination or someone else’s version of it which is most exciting,” he said.

“Occasionally it will strike me that there’s Nicole Kidman or Colin Firth playing the characters I’ve invented. The closest to a film set I’ve been before is watching the DVD extras and thinking how glamorous that looks.”

Watson, who lives in Clerkenwell, was working with hearing impaired children at St Thomas’s Hospital when he began writing in his spare time. His novel became an instant hit on publication and has now sold four million copies worldwide. He has now left the NHS and is writing his second novel.

Watson said he decided his book was in safe hands when he learned that Joffé’s mother, the actress Jane Lapotaire, suffered memory impairment after a brain haemorrhage.

Watson has been visiting filming about once a week, either at Twickenham Studios or on location. This shot was taken at a hotel near Heathrow.

He says that what Joffé has done to his story makes total sense. “They make the story work on film. But the heart of the book, the soul of the book, is still there. The first time I saw Nicole and Colin playing quite a dramatic scene I was incredibly moved to see it acted so convincingly and quite shocked in a way I really wasn’t expecting.”

Move over Bond: Colin Firth bags role as the next big screen spy

Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth has just bought the option to a new spy series, with the intention of becoming the latest fictional member of MI6.

Firth, who has started the Raindog film production company with former Sony UK chairman Ged Doherty, acquired the rights to the best-selling A Foreign Country. It’s the first instalment of a trilogy written by Charlie Cumming — Raindog has taken rights on all three — about a disgraced spook, Tom Kell, brought back to track down the woman appointed head of MI6 but who has vanished in mysterious circumstances. The second book is called A Colder War, due out next year, a molehunt story set in Greece and Turkey, and Cumming is already being hailed as the new John le Carré.

Firth played Bill Haydon in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but this would see him in the lead role. Cumming is thrilled to have him as Kell. “He would be perfect for the part because he is an actor who can convey both great passion and great dignity, as well as superior intelligence, all characteristics in Tom Kell,” he tells the Londoner. But will he oust Bond?

“It would be great to have a slightly more ‘realistic’ British spy portrayed on screen,” says Cumming, “in the way that Harry Palmer and George Smiley were the opposite of Bond throughout the Sixties and Seventies.”

Identity matters for ‘Arthur Newman’s’ Emily Blunt and Colin Firth

It took 20 years for Becky Johnston’s screenplay to reach the big screen, with Blunt and Firth inhabiting the two lost souls at the center of the story.

— When Emily Blunt was in grade school and Colin Firth was still a struggling actor, Becky Johnston was penning their characters in the first draft of a screenplay that would become “Arthur Newman.”

Twenty years later, it is finally a movie, opening Friday, a meditation on identity guised in a road trip featuring two lost souls grappling with their unenviable realities.

The film marks the directorial debut of commercial director Dante Ariola, as well as the first film Firth signed onto after“The King’s Speech” turned him into an Oscar-winning actor.

“Colin for so many years was trapped in doing fantastic acting in rom-coms, and all these movies that he didn’t like,” said Ariola. “I think he wanted to spend some of his capital after ‘King’s Speech’ doing films that he wanted to do.”

The script, which Johnston originally wrote for Nick Nolteafter the two worked together on 1991′s “Prince of Tides,” centers on Wallace Avery (Firth), a failed pro golfer and divorced father of one, who, wishing for a different life, fakes his own death and takes on a new identity only to meet a young drifter (Blunt) also looking to escape.

Johnston first wrote the script to serve as an antidote to Nolte’s performance in “Tides” as the troubled narrator with a disturbing past, but when it didn’t get made, she forgot about it and went on to write a series of films forDreamWorks, plus the Brad Pitt-starrer “Seven Years in Tibet.”

She returned to the script five years ago.

“I wanted to do something that wasn’t a job,” Johnston said. “I had never shaken loose my original idea. I rewrote it, and then we got Dante. After 20 years, it happened so quickly it was a joke.”

Both Firth and Blunt were initially terrified of the project, which they described as “unusual” and “convention-defying.”

Chatting over salads before the film’s premiere at 2012′s Toronto International Film Festival, Firth said he was specifically drawn to the script’s informality.

“This one just didn’t lend itself to one genre,” Firth said. “It’s not the first movie to deal with someone changing their identity, but in this case they aren’t being chased by the Mafia.”

Rather, it’s internal demons caused by a life unfulfilled that propel his character to seek out a new persona — what he thinks is a suave, sure-footed man about to embark on a new career as a golf pro at a country club.

Unfortunately, his character isn’t very good at playing someone he isn’t.

“There’s a lot more to finding a new identity than changing your car, your clothes and your driver’s license,” said Firth. “He just can’t inhabit it. It’s not in him. He’s not a good enough actor, to start.”

When Ariola first came upon the script, he knew he wanted someone to play Arthur Newman, néWallace Avery, who was a strong enough actor to be able to play a bad one.

“The trickiest thing was watching Colin calibrate how to put on an affectation and find this guy who talks in a way that’s not very real,” Ariola said. “He was essentially layering bad acting over really subtle acting.”

Adding to the film’s complexity is the budding romance between these two lost souls — a connection the audience is intended to sympathize with yet not necessarily root for. The duo’s incompatibility is only highlighted by the stark 23-year age gap between Firth and Blunt — a factor Blunt was happy to point out during their Canadian reunion, which coincided with Firth’s 52nd birthday.

“I actually took great pleasure reminding Colin that when we first met for a movie Stanley Tucci wanted to direct us in, he was supposed to play my father,” Blunt said with a laugh.

Firth does admit to being concerned that the age gap would contribute to “this endless, strange, age-difference permissiveness in cinema where guys are allowed to age and the women less so. I didn’t want it to seem … ”

“Pervy,” Blunt interjected.

“The casting is a bit pervy,” Firth conceded. “But I didn’t want the whole theme of the film to disappear into some notion of it being predatory in that way. It’s not a sexual midlife crisis. I think he just wants to cuddle.”

Arthur Newman: Emily Blunt & Colin Firth Talk His “Body Function” Name

Arthur Newman star Colin Firth could easily have a reputation of being rather serious. The Oscar winner (for The King’s Speech) is, in fact, the source of much humor on set, and as it turns out… in person. “People think I’m a big ol’ stiff,” Firth said.

Movie Fanatic caught up with Arthur Newman stars Firth and Emily Blunt and the actress admitted his humor was quite the surprise as well.

“I didn’t expect to laugh as much as I did,” Blunt admitted as she turned to Firth. “I thought you were going to be quite straight-laced.”

As teased in the Arthur Newman trailer, the story follows a man (Firth) who takes on a new identity when he has had enough of his own life… and then he hits the road, where he meets Blunt’s character.

When we asked Firth and his co-star what name they would choose if they had to change their moniker, Firth surprised us. It seems he would keep his first name and change his last. The actor hilariously believes it could describe the body’s way of getting rid of gas!

“Firth is not one that is easy outside the English speaking world,” Firth said. “It sounds like a body function or something.”

Blunt ran with it. “Firthed…!” she added.

Arthur Newman hits theaters this Friday and features two well-known British actors killing it with American accents — stay tuned for our review, debuting April 26.

Helen Mirren delighted to lie alongside Colin Firth as she gets star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren finally got her wish, receiving a star along the Hollywood Walk of Fame right next to fellow Brit Colin Firth.

“I couldn’t be prouder and more happy that I’m actually going to finally lie next to Colin Firth, something I’ve been wanting to do for a very long time,” Mirren said.

Mirren, 67, who won the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in 2006′s The Queen, was honored with the iconic terrazzo and brass star along Hollywood Boulevard in the historical heart of the US film industry.

Mirren’s star, the 2,488th since the Walk of Fame began in 1958, serves as a de facto lifetime achievement award for those in the entertainment industry.

Firth, who received his Walk of Fame star in 2011, won an Oscar as best actor for his portrayal of Britain’s King George VI in 2010′s The King Speech.

“Well I’m very pleased and proud and I think it’s very good for the British monarchy that here on Hollywood Boulevard, the King and the Queen are going to actually sleep together, for the rest of history,” said Mirren said at the unveiling.

The actress posed for photographers lying on her side next to her star and blew kisses to the crowd.

Writer and director David Mamet introduced Mirren.

“Helen’s performances reap higher praise than being praised, they’re loved,” Mamet said.

“And by one who’s had the absolute kick of working with her, I want to say as Rupert Brooke said, somewhere there will be a little piece of foreign ground that is always a bit of England, and that’s right there,” Mamet said.

Mirren is starring alongside Al Pacino in Mamet’s upcoming TV film about troubled music producer Phil Spector’s murder trial.
